HNE's NPI Contingency Plan

NPI: Get it. Share it. Use it.

More than 80% of HNE's Providers have told us their NPI (National Provider Identifier).  Are you among those we’re still waiting to hear from?

What if you don’t have your NPI yet?

Please apply for your NPI at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov. 

Once you have your NPI, make sure you tell us!
Send it to HNE:

  • By fax - 413-233-2665, OR
  • By e-mail - PEnrollment@HNE.com

Tell us your NPI BEFORE using it to submit claims.
This will ensure that there is no disruption to the processing and timely payment of your claims.  HNE has been working for several months on changes to our claims processing system that support the NPI, and on May 23, 2007, we will implement these changes.  In fact, some of you have already begun to submit your NPI – please continue to do so.  If you haven't already, you may begin to submit your NPI, just remember to tell us before you do.  That way, we can record your NPI in our claims payment system.

May 23!  That’s right around the corner!
We recognize that some of you may not be ready to submit your NPI by May 23, 2007.  That’s why we set up a Contingency Plan.  Providers can continue to submit claims to HNE using the HNE Provider Number through December 31, 2007.  From now through December 31, you may submit claims to HNE with your HNE Provider Number and NPI, only your HNE Provider Number, or only your NPI.

The final deadline.
Beginning January 1, 2008, you should submit claims using only your NPI.  But, as we said earlier, make sure you notify us before you begin to include your NPI when submitting claims.

What about paper?
HNE is prepared to accept the new paper HCFA 1500 form for professional claims and UB-04 for institutional claims.  Both of these new forms allow you to submit claims using your NPI.  As with electronic submissions, please notify us before including your NPI on paper claims.  You may submit paper claims to HNE containing your HNE Provider Number and NPI, only your HNE Provider Number, or only your NPI, from now until December 31, 2007.

Are you ready?
As part of HNE's Contingency Plan, we will not include the NPI in our electronic remittance (HIPAA 835) and eligibility transactions (HIPAA 270/271).  We will do so only after we confirm your readiness.
